Observation Grid

Observation and Planning Tool: Key Strategies in the French DLI Teaching Framework

The following observation grid, available in French and English, highlights the core strategies of the French Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Teaching Framework. Each category includes specific “look fors” to illustrate the types of pedagogical techniques teachers can use to effectively implement these strategies.

The grids are designed to help you assess how frequently each strategy is applied, using a scale of Often, Sometimes, or Never. We encourage teachers to use these grids as a self-reflection tool to refine their practice. Additionally, we remind teachers and administrators that the first six strategies should be integrated into every lesson, every day.

Counterbalanced Instruction, the seventh strategy, is intended for use at specific points in a unit when deemed necessary. This portion of the observation grid serves as a flexible “menu” to help teachers plan their sequences using the counterbalanced instruction approach.
