3. Modeling Cycle

In a dual language immersion classroom, the Modeling Cycle is a structured approach that helps students learn and use the target language effectively. This cycle involves several key steps to ensure clarity and support throughout the learning process.

Observable Features of the Modeling Cycle

  1. Modeling Expectations: The teacher explicitly communicates expectations regarding language use, providing a clear framework for what students should aim to achieve. This sets the stage for effective language learning.
  2. Providing Language Examples: Teachers offer relevant language examples in both spoken and written contexts. These examples illustrate how to use the target language in practical situations, helping students understand its application.
  3. Precise Language Use: For each assigned activity, the teacher models precise language usage. This includes demonstrating correct vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, ensuring students have a clear reference point.
    • The I Do Phase: In this initial phase, the teacher demonstrates the task or concept, modeling the desired language use and providing clear examples for students to follow.
    • The We Do Phase: Here, the teacher engages students in guided practice, working alongside them to reinforce learning. Together, they practice using the target language, allowing students to gain confidence with support.
    • The You Do Phase: In this stage, a pair of students practice and demonstrate in front of their peers, applying what they have learned. This encourages collaboration and peer learning, reinforcing their language skills.
    • The Everyone Does Phase: Finally, all students participate in a collective activity that reinforces the language and concepts learned. This fosters a sense of community and shared learning, ensuring that everyone is engaged.
